Adventures in Editing: Update 10

My weekly, Friday update....

Happy 1st of July, everyone! We're halfway through summer and I can't even believe it. I feel like it's zipping by us so fast.

The holiday weekend is upon us. I hope you have something planned for the 4th of July that will keep you safe while also having a GREAT time! I, myself, am flying out tomorrow to Houston, TX to visit my sister. So, to anyone in the Houston area, maybe I'll see you there!

Now, let's move on to the topic at hand, which is my update on the editing process. After some very good and sweet reminders from others out there, I pulled back the reins and gave myself some grace.

Thank you to everyone who reminded me that trying to work on a WIP while being a mom and a fulltime working woman is no easy task. I appreciate the encouragement and really do appreciate each and every one of you! Thank you again!

So, with all the lovely reminders to be nice to myself, I did exactly that. I was nice to myself. I didn't accomplish all my goals, but I actually got pretty close. So let's take a look at what I did.

1. Goal: Complete Draft 2 Readthrough

Result: I did it! I finished those pesky 44 pages and got it done. It felt so good to finally finish this.

2. Goal: Generate Draft 2 Editing Notes

Result: Not done. There's more to this, however, so let me explain. Once I finished the readthrough, I went straight to work on creating my list of edits. What I discovered, however, is that Draft 2 was pretty damn solid. And, if you remember, there was only 1 major revision that was still needed in Act 1, which I already did a week or two ago. That means, that the major editing is done, FINALLY!

Woohoo!! I'm so incredibly excited! I just about clicked my heels when I realized that the major rewrites are (most likely) over. So, that leaves me with cleaning up and fine tuning everything. Which means, I didn't bother wasting my time with creating an editing list. I just got down to business, one page at a time.

3. Goal: Finish Editing and Complete Draft 3

Result: Not done yet, but soooooo close! I've got approximately 50 pages left of clean-up work, and then Draft 3 will be complete.

The Plan: Alrighty, folks, it's time to develop the plan. My first goal is to finish cleaning up the WIP and have a completed Draft 3. I leave for Texas tomorrow, so I'm hoping to have this done today.

Now, I don't think I'm going to let Draft 3 rest this time. I really didn't make any major changes to it, so I think I'm ready to move on to the nitty gritty, fine tuning part of editing. To do that, I'm going to set "chapter goals" where I'll try to review a certain number of chapters each week, adding in the little details and getting picky with my word choices. To help me along with this, I've signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo!

I'm actually pretty excited, because I've never participated in NaNoWriMo before, but I've always wanted to. The timing has always been terrible for me. But this time, NaNoWriMo lines up beautifully, so I want to give it a go. Instead of a word count goal, however, I'll have a chapter goal for editing.

To help me stay organized, I'm going to use Sarra Cannon's (from Heart Breathings) "Camp NaNoWriMo Workbook." As such, my second goal for this week (since I'll be in Texas and the week will be totally shot anyways) is to create my game plan for finishing up this WIP.

That's it for me! I hope you have an amazing weekend, and I'll check back with you next Friday! Happy 4th of July for everyone in the U.S.A.
